Barron Waters / Burrawungal Park Dog Off leash Area

It’s a beautiful grassy park with a big lake in the middle. You have a pathway that runs all around the lake which is great for strolling – very convenient for those early Sunday mornings.

The most amazing part about Barron Waters Park is that it’s dog friendly and a large area is fully fenced! It’s a great place to let your dog off the leash, have them socialize, play with some of the other dogs in the park and let them have  a nice refreshing swim. There are no crocodiles in the Barron Waters so it’s safe for your dog to go into the water and cool off on those hot days, which we have a lot of here in Tropical North Queensland.

This is one of Biggie’s favorite spots to go to as he looooves to swim and retrieve sticks from the water, meet new furry friends and sniff around.

As there is not a lot of shade around the lake, we normally go either in the morning or late afternoon so it’s not too hot for Biggie. There are a few benches with a roof which provides some shade which is perfect if you want to sit down while your dog is running around and enjoying him/herself.

If you rather like to go to the beach: Kewarra Beach, Trinity Beach and Yorkeys Knob are great dog friendly beaches that are close to this park.

Barron Waters / Burrawungal Park Small Dog Off Leash Area

Within the fully fenced Burrawungal Park, there is also one area designated to smaller dogs. This area has a separate fence and can be found by the entrance on Impey Street. On this side of the park you also have a water fountain if you or your dog are thirsty. This fully fenced and off-leash dog area is great if you have a smaller dog and want them to play in a safe environment with like-sized doggies.

Barron Waters Dog Park How to get there

There are 2 ways to enter the Barron Waters off-leash dog park.

The first entrance can be found on Lake Placid Road. When you get off the Cairns Western Arterial Road in Caravonica and turn onto Lake Placid Road, you will have a carpark a bit further on the right-hand side. From here you can walk straight into Barron Waters Park. You can enter the fully fenced dog-area either by following the path turning right (which we normally do as it’s a bit quicker) or keep left where at one point you’ll also reach the fenced dog area. There is also a water fountain on this side of the park.

The other entrance can be found on Impey Street behind the Baway Close bus stop. You also have a carpark here and can enter the off-leash dog park straight away. We often park here so we can let Biggie of the leash from the get-go and he can be on his merry way exploring around. This also saves us from being pulled all the way to the off-leash dog area as he often can’t contain his excitement.

Biggie’s verdict

biggies verdict of barron waters park

I love a good swim! And holy heck there’s a lot of water! There are also Labrador Meetups in this park which are my favorite days. I will see all my friends and we have a great time playing and swimming together.

I am normally the fastest swimmer as I do practice a lot! However some of those other labs are so freakin’ fast! My parents take me here a few times a week as they like to go for a nice relaxing walk and I swim along.
